The world’s most iconic mountain town? Quite possibly, the world’s most photographed peak the Matterhorn strides the Italian and Swiss boarder sitting at over 4400m. Only Chamonix and Mt Blanc can boast higher credentials.
Zermatt town is a car free cosmopolitan place where the elite brush shoulders with hardened mountaineering types. You’ll need to take the train or bus up from lower down Tasch though. But as with anything Swiss and train realted, its pretty quick and efficient.
Back streets are lined with ancient Swiss chalets and delicious cafes serving hot choc and Swiss style pastries.
Not for the light of wallet though as lift passes here are some of the most expensive in Europe. However the high altitude lift system constantly sees upgrades and investment and there are rarely any lift queues as a consequence. Heli skiing and off piste days are excellent for those who are qualified and with the ever present back drop of the Toblerone mountain does it get any better? Summer is just as busy with hiking climbing and mountain biking popular. However, you’ll never be too far away from those selfie takers looking for a profile update pic with the Matterhorn under their finger.
