Val Thorens Ski Resort

If there’s one ski resort sticks two fingers firmly up to global warming and the constant threat of snowless winters it gotta be Val Thorens.

Making up the south western arm of the worlds biggest ski domain the 3 Valleys, including Meribel and Courchevel, Val T has some of highest pistes in Europe. Snow sure altitude for all pistes which start at 2300m makes Val Thorens the highest in Europe and highly desired part of the 700km linked area from November to May.

Its architecture was initially not so desirable, as most of the 1960+ ‘new’ French resorts in the Savoie region seem to follow, Val T does have the added bonus of being able to ski safari away from its less attractive features.

Lately its increasingly well healed patrons have seen a surge in tasteful re-cladding, traditional chalets and lux boutique hotels spring up. Some of the Alps most revered eateries now adorn its town centre and slopes.

Fear not though, the area still has accommodation solutions to suit the original ski crowd that loved and still love this great ski area. Lower down the valley St Martin de Bellevue offers a lower altitude and more traditional ski village that has lift directly to the area. An option for those who suffer from staying at such dizzy heights.

The excessively long drive up the valley is nearly always rewarded by great skiing, incredible Alpine vistas and the benefit of apres ski ‘altitude’ beers…
