Where? What ? I hear you say. Let us tell you. Saint Foy is the best kept secret in the Tarantaise ski area of Savoie. You probably have heard of it because its gets over shouted by the likes of Les Arcs, Val d’Isere - Tignes and the Paradiski area. Most of which you may agree lack character, charm and a local feel. St Foy is the opposite and punches well above its statistical weight.
With only 4 ski lifts and 10 main pistes you’re thinking ‘yeah right’.
However, the variation offered in between the pistes is phenomenal. Just skipping and zooming on the ideal 20-30% gradient between the blues and reds makes the whole resort an infinite ski piste.
The village of St Foy ski station is a purpose built area that is effectively divided into two styles of accommodation. The originally constructed Chalets are utterly beautiful using local stone an meleze wooden structures. Fells like they have been there for ages. On the opposite side of the beginners slopes os the new MMV Etoile des Cimes apartments.
Higher up to the skiiers left of the mountain is the Marquise lift. Rapid and topping out at 2500 m it really offers a genuine 30min return ski to town. The Aiguille to the right offer steeper options including the Crystal Dark descent and Le Monal.
In our opinion St Foy has some of the best eateries and restaurants in the French Alps. Key to this is their private ownership. Prices here are on the money for quality and most places offer constantly varying plats du jours. Our picks are…
La Maison à Colonnes (00 33 4 79 06 94 80).
Chez Merie (00 33 4 79 06 90 16).
Les Brevettes (00 33 6 87 26 10 11).
Les Marquises (00 33 7 63 79 08 08).
